Laid in such a serene valley surrounded by beautiful mountains. I had a wonderful time at the Takefu Knife Village - it truly was an inspirational visit.
The shop was very nice and specially the mirrored knife display was a real piece of art! The viewable workshop gallery from the shop was also a unique and specially the viewing gallery to the shop was also awesome - the 5S in the shop can be much better!
Finally the knife making experience was awesome - it could have been more fruitful if the Master himself or the Guide could translate more details! Will do it again, see yaa!

I had a great time making my knife with the instructor, who spoke very good English, which was appreciated. The additional interpreter booked us a table at a local cafe for lunch which was nice as well.
Happy to say it was a 5 star experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to have a knife-making experience.

I attended the knife making course in November 2025. I made a special stop at Tsuruga overnight so i could attend.
The class is hands on and this was the attraction. I learned to flatten and shape the blade before it was punched out. I quenched the blade, profiled and sharpened it before the handle was installed. The 2 artisans and 1 interpreter ensured a great experience and i could ask plenty of questions. The pace of work keeps it interesting. I highly recommend this course for blade nerds as well as novices interested in the craft.
I opted for a carbon steel blade and paid extra for a nicer handle. The blade was oiled and placed in a slip case and packed in a slender box. It’s ok for placing in your checked in suitcase.
There’s a place open nearby for lunch. A taxi ride from the train station is necessary to get to the forge. Dress with long sleeves and wear closed shoes.
The website was not easy to navigate to make the booking. This may be a suggestion for the future.

To experience knife making where the best knives in the world are made was truly a privilege. The interpreter was so helpful and we were blessed to have a delicious lunch together.
Masato san and Kawamoto san are excellent teachers. They demonstrated their skills and guided us on proper techniques.
The shirogami santoku that we forged is exceptionally sharp (owner of an aogami #2 santoku).
The Takefu Knife Village shop has a selection of incredible knives which you should consider purchasing whilst you are there.
This is definitely worth doing.

This was a highlight of my visit to Japan. The staff were very accommodating and the instructor was very attentive in making sure we had a positive experience. I was delighted with the knife I made under his tutelage. The interpreter was very precise and also most hospitable. This is a once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed.

My brother and I took the one-day knifemaking course at Takefu Knife Village, and it was unforgettable. Though we spoke no Japanese, the staff provided an interpreter, making the day smooth and enjoyable. We worked with Master Nakayama, whose expressions and demos made everything clear. The workshop was lively, with smiths working all around. We used traditional tools to forge a santoku knife from a blank of carbon steel. Though our grinding wasn’t perfect, the final knives are functional and beautiful. Engraving our names in kanji/katakana was by far the hardest part! For about 35,000 yen (~$350 CAN), you get a full day experience, expert guidance, hands-on forging, and a handmade knife to take home - highly recommended!

Thank you so much for joining our lesson and giving feedback to us! We are glad to know that you liked the experience. Hope you enjoy using it and hope to see you again someday in the future.

This was an amazing and unforgettable experience. The prospect of making a knife of your own from it's base materials with the guidance of an actual blacksmith is something you have to try. With guidance every step of the way and a trusty translator who will make sure you understand the wisdoms imparted on you you'll have a great day forging your very own knife. Best of all is that you get to take it home with you afterwards. Meaning that if your accommodation allows it you can use it the very same day.
It's a bit out of the way for tourists, but worth the trouble.
